I believe that tools people create have an impact on culture and society. Given this impact, it is important that we treat each other with respect, preserving mutual autonomy to the greatest extent possible. While it is not possible to fully predict what people will do with software, my goal is to extend human expression and limit potential damage. If I am involved with a project without beneficence for society, I will stop working on that project. I refuse to develop weapons of war. If I observe unjust practices, culture, or algorithms, I may find it more important to expose them than adhere to prior agreements or preserve my career. I will not lie or prevaricate to benefit any company or institution. I will strive to be honest in reporting results from experiments and their true implications.
